Susann D'Antonio has a BA in Fine Arts and has
continued learning in varied art practices through
workshops and classes her entire adult life. A long time
resident of the Keys, Susann moved to Big Pine Key in
Susann's main creative focus is 3 dimensional mixed
media assemblages and paintings. The paintings are mixed
media mainly using encaustic and oil paint. Encaustic is
a technique of painting with a beeswax and demar resin
medium. The paintings are many layered and through this
overlay produces a luminosity and transparency that
contributes to the painting depth and distinctive lush
She has also a series of mixed media figures, Altered
Egos, which are based on a gourd and enhanced with
various found objects and encaustic monotypes on fabric.
has served on the Art in Public Places board for many
years, assisting in placement of art in Monroe County's
public spaces. She is also currently on the Board of
Monroe County Arts Council. She and her husband own
Framing in Paradise, a custom frame shop on Big Pine
Key, located in Artists in Paradise Gallery.
a joint project, Susann and her husband, Bob, build
large 3 dimensional costumes each fall for Fantasy Fest,
one of Key Wes's most popular events. They have been
competing in the Fantasy Fest Parade for the last 20
years and have been fortunate to have had pictures of
their costumes published worldwide. In 2017 they
branched out to include the 2nd annual Papio Kinetic
Parade sponsored by the Key West Art & Historic Society.
